Fiat Linea facelift to be launched in first week of march

Fiat showcased the new Linea facelift at the Auto Expo 2014.
Although there is no official confirmation yet, according to a report on OD,  the new Fiat Linea facelift launch will happen by the 1st week of March.
On the frontal section, the new Fiat Linea facelift gets a new front grille, new fog lamps and a new front bumper. The Linea facelift also boasts of a revised boot-lid, which houses the rear number plate. The outside rear view mirrors feature turn indicators integrated into them.
Fiat Linea Facelift
On the interior section, the dashboard of the car makes use of a new color. The new audio system is equipped with a USB port, aux port and Bluetooth connectivity.
Other highlights of the car include:
  • 16-inch alloys
  • Rear parking sensor
  • Cruise control
  • Rain sensing wipers
  • Auto headlamps
  • Ambient dashboard lighting
For the safety of the passengers, the new Fiat Linea facelift is equipped with ABS, EBD and airbags.
Fiat will continue to use the 1.3-liter Multijet diesel motor which produces 93PS of max power and 209 Nm of torque. The petrol motor will be the 1.4-liter T-jet. Both the engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Rumors about Fiat plonking the Linea with the bigger 1.6 liter were dismissed at the unveiling of the car at the Auto Expo 2014.
It is to be noted that Fiat India has never really managed to set sales charts on fire with the sales number with the Linea. Even after being such a good product, the car couldn’t achieve much success mainly due to the poor after sales support that was being offered by the Tata-Fiat venture. However, after the split of the Tata-Fiat JV, we can expect the new Fiat Linea facelift to enjoy better sales figures than its predecessor.

12th Auto expo Came to end on 11th feb

Courtesy-India today
The curtains came down on the 12th edition of India's flagship automobile show, Auto Expo, with the industry hoping that positivity around the spectacle will spark a revival in demand after a prolonged slump in sales.
Piaggio NT3 concept car
The week-long show witnessed 70 unveiling, of which 26 were global models. A total of 5.61 lakh people visited the show, with 90,000 attending on the last day.
The previous edition of the expo held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi in 2012, attracted 7 lakh people.
"We had our qualms before the show but it has turned out to be much more structured compared to the ones we had at Pragati Maidan before. It is very well laid out here, with almost international standards and people could experience all the stalls in a better fashion," Maruti Suzuki India Vice President (Marketing) Manohar Bhat told PTI.
With the expo being held when the auto industry is struggling with declining sales, he said: "The positive response we have received here from the people gives an indication to the industry of what of lies ahead."
Auto Expo 2014
A total of 5.61 lakh people visited the show.
Expressing similar sentiment, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Deputy Director General Sugato Sen said: "The 70 unveilings/launches that we witnessed during the expo will excite the market. Let's hope that we will be able to reap the harvest of what we have sown."
Car sales in India fell for the fourth straight month in January, declining 7.59 per cent and prompting SIAM to seek government support in the upcoming interim Budget.
According to data released by SIAM, auto companies sold 1,60,289 cars in the domestic market last month compared with 1,73,449 units a year earlier.
Annual car sales in India declined for the first time in 11 years in 2013, posting a 9.59 percent dip, as the auto industry reeled under a prolonged demand slump due to the economic slowdown. Buyers were deterred by rising fuel prices and high loan rates.
Asked if the India Expo Mart here would become the permanent venue for the Auto Expo, considering the positive response from both exhibitors and the general public, Sen said it is too early to finalise a decision on that.
Among the key launches at the show was Maruti Suzuki's hatchback Celerio, which boasts of an automatic gear shift and is priced between Rs.3.9 lakh and Rs.4.96 lakh in Delhi.
The company also unveiled two concept models -- Ciaz sedan and the crossover SX4 S-Cross -- to meet growing demand for sedans in India, China and elsewhere. .
Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the second-largest car maker in the country, expanded its product portfolio with the launch of a new generation sports utility vehicle, Sante Fe, priced at between Rs.26.3 lakh and Rs.29.2 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The flavour for this year was the compact sedan segment, with many players planning to make a foray into the category.
While Hyundai showcased its Xcent, Ford displayed its Figo Concept and Tata Motors announced plans to launch Zest later this year, apart from a new hatchback Bolt.
On the second day of the show, superbikes hogged the limelight with companies such as Harley Davidson, Triumph, DSK Hyosung, Hero MotoCorp and Japan's Terra Motors presenting bikes and electric vehicles.
The glamour quotient at this year's auto show was led by Bollywood superstars Priyanka Chopra, brought in by Jaguar, Kareena Kapoor at DC Design, John Abraham at Yamaha, Akshay Kumar at HMSI and Ranbir Kapoor at Hero MotoCorp.
Sachin Tendulkar also sent the crowd into a tizzy when he appeared for BMW on the first day.
The first two days of the expo, which started on February 5, were reserved for media and the general public was allowed from February 7.
Unlike in the past, the 12th edition of Auto Expo was split into two parts due to space constraints, with the motor show at Greater Noida and the auto components exhibition at Pragati Maidan.
On the last day, the crowd started trickling in from morning and reached a peak by the afternoon. While many left with good memories at the end of the day, some who came late were disappointed as they could not see all the exhibits that were on display.
"I took half-day off from office and drove all the way from Faridabad. I could not enter the hall where Toyota and Honda displayed their vehicles as they closed the gate by 5 pm," said a disappointed Abhishek Kumar, a trainee engineer with a leading automobile company.
He, however, had a lot of praise for the organisers, SIAM, the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India.
"This is my third Auto Expo. The crowd management at Pragati Maidan was very bad and here it was very good," Kumar said, adding that the distance to the India Expo Mart here wasn't a deterrent for an auto enthusiast like him.

These cars have been engineered for global markets, through global teams across India, UK and Korea to set new standards in their respective segments. These cars are a true representation of our Horizonext philosophy, with best-in-class offerings for performance that yet offers economy and efficiency.”

ZEST and BOLT have been designed and developed based on three key fundamental principles, namely, DesigNext, DriveNext, ConnectNext. ZEST and BOLT, a result of the collaborative design inputs from the three Tata Motors design studios in Pune, Coventry (UK) and Turin ( Italy), come with several segment first features and a new design language on the exterior and the interior of the car.

The company has introduced a new design language – DesignNext - that gives an expression to an excellent combination of sleek, smart styling and enhanced comfort that increases driver productivity. The new design language distills the fine points of auto design with cuts and lines that accentuate the modern India and its global citizens.

The new design semantics include the new Tata signature grill with new the Humanity Line, visually flowing into the dynamic headlamps to create a unique design signature for the brands. With flowing lines that create an illusion of movement even when the car is standing still, its exterior exaggerates size to give it a feeling of a larger hatchback or a sedan. In the ZEST, the projector headlamps complemented by chrome accents, the daytime running lights, the rear treatment of LED lamps, the trendy 15” alloy wheels, combined with a signature Buzz Blue colour, add up to a dynamic and stylish pouncing stance. Matching aesthetic design with function, the BOLT’s floating roof spoiler not only provides an extra-sporty touch but also aids in aerodynamics. The sporty, confident look is further enhanced with fog lamp Bezels.

The interiors of both these cars are geared for a premium feel. The driver-focused dashboard architecture carries premium chrome embellishment to render the cockpit with an aura of elegance. The instrument cluster and the central AC vents are connected in a single wing-shaped graphics.

DriveNext, is a new approach to the driving dynamics that offers driver complete control of a highly responsive machine. The ZEST and BOLT will be powered by the segment-first, Turbocharged Intercooled Multi-point Fuel-Injected (MPFi) Petrol Engine, REVOTRON 1.2T, which brings revolution in refinement, performance and economy.

The diesel variant of ZEST will have the first-in-class F-Tronic technology-enabled, 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission and will be powered by a segment-leading 90PS engine with 200 Nm of uninterrupted flat torque to offer a peppy drive with seamless delivery of power.

Further, both ZEST and BOLT will have EPAS (Electronic Power Assisted System), with ‘Active Return’ function and speed sensitive power steering – a first for both segments. New advanced ABS for improved braking efficiency and with yet another segment-first, the Cornering Stability feature, add to the safety features of the vehicle. A silent, quieter cabin will ensure a pleasant and superlative drive experience. The Dual-path suspension coupled with a zero pivot subframe ensures smooth and comfortable ride. The improved suspension provides effective isolation from road inputs without compromising on the body control, translating into a class leading balance between ride and handling. This provides for a very comfortable but engaging drive experience.

At Tata Motors, with ConnectNext, the company will deliver a new level of driving and ownership experience as users from their own smart device, can not only enjoy superior quality of entertainment, control the deliverance of all ergonomics, acoustics and climatic needs, but also get access to outside world seamlessly, with a touch.

Recognizing the dynamic consumer world where connectivity is an increasing need for all, Tata Motors has associated with HARMAN for designing the infotainment and audio acoustics system and with MapmyIndia for next generation navigation & location based services.

The company has incorporated latest new technologies to make the ZEST and the BOLT, the most connected, high-tech hatchback and sedan respectively. Forming the core of the ConnectNext experience is the all-new HARMAN infotainment system with first-in-class features that will allow the car users to stay connected with friends, family and the world.

With the 5-inch touchscreen supporting rich multimedia experience, advanced Bluetooth technology, smart voice recognition, advanced smartphone integration, supporting phone enabled navigation, social media integration, touch phone controlled interface, the ZEST and the BOLT will ensure these car users could seamlessly integrate their professional and personal lives into their commute and travel, while bringing in an unparalled infotainment experience. The system has in-built HVAC controls, which is a first-in-class experience for all consumers.

Ever tried Automatic Manual Transmission? Here's how it works!

Courtesy-Car dekho
Maruti Suzuki finally landed the much awaited Celerio hatchback into our market at a price tag of 3.90 lakh for the base manual petrol (LXI) and 4.29 lakh for the base AMT petrol (LXI). The vehicle is the least expensive automatic available on sale in our country. Let's dive into the technicalities of this Automatic Manual Transmission.
Automatic manual transmission, as the phrase depicts, has two modes - manual and automatic. The automatic mode of this gearbox is similar to and behaves like the conventional automatics. The manual mode (imprinted as 'M' in the gearshift lever) gives you a feeling of driving a manual car but without a clutch pedal in the foot well. In the 'M' mode, you can enjoy the best of the engine, revving it hard till the red-line, extracting the best possibilities from each gear.
Automatic Mode
In the AMT setup, torque converter is absent, whereas, it is present in conventional automatics. The torque converter in an automatic vehicle replaces the mechanical clutch, allowing the transmission to separate from the powertrain. In the AMT, the car is equipped with a dedicated ECU (Electronic Control Unit) for precise shifting. The electronic-hydraulic actuators help in changing gears, indeed removing the need of a clutch in the foot well! It has three modes namely 'D'- Driving mode, 'N'- Neutral mode and 'R' - Reverse mode.
'M' Mode
'M' mode, or the manual mode, is rather more fun to drive as compared to the automatic mode in this vehicle. In this mode, you can rev the rpm count to red-line in each gear! To engage the vehicle in 'M' mode, you need to flick the gear lever to the extreme left. 'M' mode sports sequential gear shifts, just like paddle shifters behind the steering wheels in high-end cars. For an up-shift, you just need to nudge the lever down a little where '+' sign is indicated, similarly, for a down-shift, you require a little nudge upside where '-' is indicated.
As the power swapping torque converter is replaced by electronic hydraulic actuators, the car delivers a mileage similar to that of its manual counterpart. The ARAI certified mileage figure for the car stands at 23.1kmpl. The only disadvantage of automatic manual transmission is that it offers little jerky shift in comparison with the conventional automatics. Just to add to your knowledge, the production of AMT gearbox is done by Marelli Powertrains, at the manufacturing facility based in Manesar. This company is a subsidiary of the Italian component manufacturer - Magneti Marelli.
We'll keep bringing you more guides...meanwhile, you enjoy your rides with AMT!!

Surprise! 2-wheelers use 61% of petrol, cars only 34%

Courtesy- WIki Media
According to a survey conducted for the Government of India by M/s. Nielsen (India) Pvt. Ltd., 99.6% of the total petrol consumed in India is used by the transport sector. The survey also indicates that largest consumers of petrol in India are two-wheelers. Cars come in a distant second place.
The result of the survey shows that two-wheelers account for 61.42% of the country’s total petrol consumption of 16 million tonnes. In the states of Odisha (82.3%), Bihar (75.2%) and Rajasthan (72.9%), two-wheelers account for more than 70% of the total petrol sold.
Cars and three-wheelers account for 34.33% and 2.34%of the country’s total petrol consumption respectively. Most three-wheelers have switched to CNG or diesel, since that proves cost-effective.
Petrol has been deregulated by the Government, which has caused its price to shoot up drastically in comparison to diesel, which is still regulated. Most two-wheelers in India are bought by the rural users or people who are looking for a convenient and cost-effective means of transport. If the Government continues to let the price of petrol keep climbing, it will not be long before many Indians find it difficult to afford running a personal vehicle.

Tata Nano, including other small cars failed independent crash tests

Courtesy- NDTV
Some of India's best-selling small cars have failed independent crash tests conducted by a global car safety watchdog.

All five small cars popular on the Indian market last year, including the famous Tata Nano and the Hyundai i10, failed the crash tests performed by London car-safety watchdog Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme).

The cars that were tested were the Tata Nano, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo. All cars had to be made-in-India models only, and the most basic or entry-level version available in the market was selected for testing. This meant none of them had airbags - one of the most basic prerequisites globally to pass a safety test.

There were two tests carried out on identical cars of the same make - meaning two of each car were procured by Global NCAP from Indian showrooms, and shipped to Germany for the tests. One crash test was performed at 56 kmph, the other at 64 kmph.

All five cars failed the test, landing a zero on a scale of 1-5.

Representatives from each manufacturer were invited to witness the test, and the results have been shared with them all too. Automakers said the issue of car safety is complex, involving not just passenger safety, but also the safety of those outside the car. That means cars need to handle well and drivers must be educated about the rules of the road, and roads should be in good condition.

Hyundai_i10_360x270.jpgAs NDTV's Automobiles Editor, I was consulted on which cars should be tested.  Of the five cars, only the Figo and Polo showed good structural rigidity and therefore a safer cabin, while the smaller cars performed rather poorly. What is rather surprising to me is that a car like the Hyundai i10 - which is only made in India for global markets - also did badly. The made-in-India for export to Europe i10 has a good rating in its Euro NCAP test for instance, which begs the question - are the cars for Indian buyers made differently?

India's growing middle class has helped fuel a booming auto industry, making the country the world's sixth-largest car market.  But nearly 140,000 people die on Indian roads every year in nearly five lakh accidents. That's the worst road safety record in the world.

Given those grizzly statistics, it is staggering to think India is the only country in the world's top ten car markets that does not have a comprehensive testing programme that measures the safety of cars.

Reactions from car-makers:
TATA MOTORS
"Tata Motors sees safety as a priority, and is going to closely review the results of the Global NCAP test, before drawing any conclusions vis-a-vis its product strategy. However all its cars do meet all Indian safety regulations as mandated by the government, at this time."

FORD INDIA
"Safety is one of the higher priorities in the design of our vehicles. Our vehicles consistently meet or exceed applicable industry standards. We are monitoring the progress of this review."

VW INDIA
"At Volkswagen, we recognise this need, given increasing driving speeds, more women drivers, longer driving times and a younger driver. Therefore, we have decided to have front dual airbags as standard on the Polo, as our continuing commitment to safer and better driving. We are the first automaker in India to do so, making the Polo the safest premium hatchback in the market today."

HYUNDAI MOTOR INDIA"Hyundai Motor India Ltd affirms that Hyundai vehicles are designed and build to meet all the prescribed safety standards set by Indian Regulatory Authorities."
