the end of this decade, Tata Motors plans to turn around its passenger car business. The Indian automaker is betting big on a brand new platform, dubbed the Advanced Modular Platform (AMP). The AMP will allow Tata Motors to share parts and production facilities between a new range of cars. This sharing will reduce costs and allow the automaker to price its products competitively, while also giving car buyers a range of new features.
An EconomicTimes report states that the advanced modular platform will host 4 cars initially. An entry level A-Segment hatchback, a premium B-segment hatchback, a compact sedan and a compact MPV are the four new products that the AMP is expected to support initially. Other products such as a compact SUV and a utility vehicle are also expected to be supported by the AMP in due course of time. Eventually, the AMP could be supporting up to 8 cars in the Tata Motors range.
The AMP might not apply to the large SUVs in Tata Motors' current range such as the Xenon, Safari and Aria. Future models of these SUVs will be underpinned by a new body-on-ladder platform designed for large utility vehicles. The cars based on the AMP will begin trickling in from 2015-16. Until then, Tata Motors will refresh its existing range of cars with new features and design elements as a stop-gap arrangement.
Refreshed cars in Tata Motors' line up for the next couple of years will include new variants of the Nano and a facelifted 2014 Vista hatchback. While the CNG variant of the Nano is expected to be launched in the next few months, the diesel powered model is likely to arrive in 2014. Among SUVs, the Safari Storme and the Aria are expected to get refreshed next year, with the addition of automatic transmissions likely.
